Class Syllabus - Summer School 2015 Emma Lazarus

Welcome to our 2015 summer school class! I am excited to embark on the next four weeks with you. We will be discussing and learning about personal struggles and how they build character. We will look to history and a time in the United States known as the Great Depression, drawing connections to our own lives in the present day. Moreover, we will explore excerpts from the Grapes of Wrath, the graphic novel Persepolis, and poetry by China Achebe and Mitsuye Yamada. Finally, we will create a digital autobiography, digital presentation, comic or animation, and culminating argumentative essay. 

Materials:

2-inch binder
dividers for binder
pack of loose-leaf paper
labeled vocabulary section in binder
labeled section for handouts
labeled section for notes

Grade Breakdown:

40% Projects
30% Tests / Quizzes
20% Written Assignments / Classwork
10% Personal Competency 
Extra Credit: Homework that will be posted on -> http://elsummerstahl.blogspot.com/

Basic Rules and Respect:

No cell phone or headphones in class.
Finish food before entering the classroom.
Beverages are allowed with caps.
Students more than 5 minutes late will need a late pass.
After 30 minutes, laptops will no longer be available.
No more than 2 absences for the term. 
Excessive lateness will count as an absence.

Planning and Preparation: Did you spend time during the week studying, reviewing notes and/or completing assigned readings for this class?

Self-management: Did you, without being reminded by the teacher, enter the class on time, find your seat, and start on the “Do Now?” 

Self-management: Did you ask the teacher about information you did not fully understand in class, about missed or missing work, or about your grade?

Self-management: Did you try your hardest in class to pay attention, complete tasks, and listen to other students and the teacher?
